By implication, I don't know what Ubuntu considers "686" when building a kernel image. I'm guessing that it uses gcc definitions, but that is no help, since I don't know gcc's mapping, either.
I've just found that "config.guess" exists in many packages. just "apt-file search" it. It gives: # config.guess sparc-sun-solaris2.9 and: $ config.guess i686-pc-linux-gnu It seems to base most of its decisions on things like uname. Would that help? Is there a script which can read /proc/info and output a gcc
architecture name? (suitable for use with gcc's -mcpu= option)
I suspect that this is exactly what config.guess intends to do, though not directly from /proc/info (you mean /proc/cpuinfo, right?) Is there a script which can read /proc/info and output an Ubuntu kernel
image meta package name?
You mean "which ubuntu kernel meta package is most optimized for the current hardware"? Not that I'm aware of.
Is there a script which can read /proc/info and output an Ubuntu mplayer package name?
Ditto. BTW - speaking of which - the new Xen packages documentation in Debian Etch seem to assume that the user already knows which package he should use. Could someone please tell me "yes/no" on weather " linux-image-2.6.18-3-xen-k7" is the right package to use to run a Xen machine on top of Etch running on AMD Athlon 2500 (the old 32 bit non AMD-V)?
