If you're using the Live version of DSL, ndiswrapper's memory allocation problem may come from DSL's "ramdisk". DSL allocates a fair amount of RAM for a virtual "hard disk" to temporarily store the filesystem hierarchy needed for linux to run when not installed to the actual hard drive.
