I'm trying to get this card going on an old laptop and am using Damn

If you're using the Live version of DSL, ndiswrapper's memory
allocation problem may come from DSL's "ramdisk". DSL allocates a fair
amount of RAM for a virtual "hard disk" to temporarily store the
filesystem hierarchy needed for linux to run when not installed to the
actual hard drive. It might be hindering the allocation of clean RAM
for other things like ndiswrapper, but that's just a guess. ;)

I have DSL installed to the hard disk; however, not in the usual way,
but in what DSL calls a "frugal install".
The laptop has only 64MB of RAM, but there's a little monitor on the
desktop that reports RAM usage and it usually reports a relatively low
percentage used.
However, immediately after the desktop appears on boot-up, that
percentage can be very high before it settles down.
I have only the crudest understanding of these things, but coupling what
you say with something Peter Chubb said in an earlier post makes me
wonder whether that early high usage of RAM makes it impossible
afterwards for the needed memory to be allocated by ndiswrapper.
Although that possibility doesn't help me get the card going, if it's
the case, it does at least explain why I've been having the problem.
Thanks very much for taking the trouble to reply.
