Thank you to both Tuxta and James for your replies to my queries about the 
above subject.

I took from the latter that I didn't need to worry about the reference in the 
build instructions to "check if it is a binary file before loading".

I took from the former that I had been wrong to say that my modem treated "my 
computer as 10.1.1.3". What I should have said is that my modem treated my 
Ethernet card in my computer as 10.1.1.3.

With those two bits of information, I was able to follow the build instructions 
to completion successfully and load the driver.
