My Eee PC 901 runs Ubuntu 8.10 (installed via USB thumbdrive) quite
happily, albeit with a third-party kernel (the default one works, but
the one from array.org gives better control over all the hardware).

Also, the Netbook Remix interface makes the small screen quite usable.

If you buy the Linux version of the 901, you avoid the Microsoft Tax
and get 20GB (4 + 16GB) of storage. That version is harder to find
than the Windows one, but it should cost around the same price.

I've also upgraded my RAM to 2GB, which I don't think is possible with
the Aspire One.

On the minus side, the keyboard is a tad cramped. You can get used to
it, but you'll never be as quick on it as with a full-size keyboard.
The Acer's looks more manageable.

The Acer's trackpad, however, is worthless. The Eee's trackpad is
excellent. It's large and supports multi-touch. This allows you do
things like scroll with two fingers (like a Mac) and middle/right
click using two/three fingers.
