OpenSUSE may be good only if you plan to use it on relatively powerful PC.

If you're choosing only between CentOS and OpenSUSE, the last one is more up
to date and it is original.

You will be truly rewarded with unprecedented universality and stability if
you choose Debian.
"Specific software requirements" in most cases can be slightly bended to fit
the best OS which may be far more important in long term.

For someone new to Linux I would not recommend Debian as it can be a
pain to get all the hardware support sorted. I still can't get it
(Debian 6)to recognise my onboard sound system whereas Ubuntu, OpenSuSE
and Fedora picked it up easily during install.

Derivatives such as Ubuntu 10.10 (11.04 is flawed) are easier to set up.
OpenSuSE 11.4 and Fedora 14 are also excellent choices.

OpenSuSE 11.4 is on the cover disk of this month's APC magazine.

I feel better now, when I decided to make the switch to Linux, in 2004, I
bought the SLUG Debian distro...felt better paying for software then.

I never managed to get Debian to work. I eventually installed Knoppix on my Laptop, as the run from CD version worked well.

I understand that Ubuntu is a derivative of Knoppix, and the Kogan Agora
Netbook, I bought a couple of years ago, came with it pre-installed. Likely
to still be the only Australian retailer to ship Linux preinstalled).

There is currently a new Agora available from Kogan and I understand they
are delivering the pre-orders today. There is no shop - you have to buy online.

At some stage, I plan to bootup on the Open Suse disk Patrick handed out at the last SLUG meeting, when I have access to a DVD drive. but I see no reason to switch. I have been documenting my linux experience here:<http://ramin.com.au/linux/>
