Yes, developers will develop on the iPhone and users will buy the iPhone. But I think the problem here is that Apple (and the network operators) will control what gets developed and what gets used on iPhones, not the users and not the third party developers. Any app that threatens to divert $$$ from them (like VoIP apps) may never see the light of day on a iPhone or be offered through the iPhone iTunes store (which is the only place where you can get apps for the iPhone). Even something as simple as a ring-tone composer may be disallowed since it diverts money from network operators who sell ring-tones (it has been on other smartphones, if I remember rumours correctly). Contrast that with what is happening for the Nokia Internet Tablets. Abiword has just been ported to it. Somebody has even worked out how to boot Google's Android on it, as well as a stock Debian distribution (compiled for ARM, of course). I expect similar things will happen on OpenMoko and Freerunner.
