Linux has improved a lot though. When I first started using Linux
(about 5 years ago I think, when I was still in JC), it looks worse
than XP. Now it looks reasonable given enough tweaking. I'm getting
used to my work's Gnome as well (though personally likes XFCE better).

There are not enough force being applied to move Linux quickly in term
of UI designs (and it's hard to have one given the nature of open
source; as long as not enough programmers care about UI, there won't
be sufficient force to move that way). Steve Jobs is a ruthless man
when it comes to UI, and he can do that since it's a top-down company.

Disclaimer: I can't design well; so while I do want to see Linux with
better UI, I won't be of much help. I rely on interaction designer to
do the design. (:
