I'd recommend Ubuntu as well for the large community support there is.
I suspect the problem you have for the installation could be burning the image
onto the CD at a faster speed. Try burning it at 8X or lower.

I left the linux scene for years.
Yesterday, after much hassle, d/l mandriva one 2009 and mandriva free cd1 and 2.
Burnt all iso to cds, no errors.
Boot Mandriva One, cold not pass the boot stage progress bar left about 10 mm
length and hang.
Installed Mandriva Free 2009 CD 1 & 2 to a 6 GB hdd, done install. Reboot, a
message floating on monitor
"input signal out of range"; system hang.
Now what to do ? !
