Yup! This is indeed it! i booted up to mem=3G and indeed networking is fine!

You're right also, i'm not comfortable to apply the kernel patch. Hence, i'll
run with mem=3G for the time being, while looking at 2 long term solutions:
1. Wait for the patch to get into the kernel release. Since the issue is
already discovered and a fix already found? Would it be fair to say that a new
kernel release containing this patch won't be too far off?
2. Get a new NIC card. Question... now that i have already setup the OS, if i
do get a new NIC card, how easy would it be to load drivers for the new card?
