Well... looks like not a very high chance of the workaround making it to a
kernel release soon...
And i definitely don't want to keep running in mem=3G mode... that was the main
reason for switching to AMD64 in the first place...
Looks like i'll be getting new NIC card soon, and when (or if) the fix
eventually gets released, i will have 2 usable eth (though i don't know how i
can utilise them at the ame time)!
Thanks everyone - especially Patrick - for your help! It was quite an
interesting troubleshooting process! :-)
