Hi all,
I would like to share my user experience with Ubuntu 10.x. Some
background: I'm an IT person, with extensive experience with Windows,
Red Hat and Mac platforms. In fact, I have been using a Mac for about 10
years now. To me, nothing quite beats Mac OSX in terms of GUI
design/implementation and also the hardware is excellent.
I'm a teacher and my workplace uses Windows XP as the standard operating
environment. So I use a Windows XP notebook at work. However, after
Ubuntu 10.x came out, I installed it on my work notebook and also my
personal netbook.
So far, it's been outstanding. The User Interface has been really great,
and most hardware just works (although proprietary drivers for the WLAN
were needed to be set up). In fact, it's so good that I've stopped using
Windows XP (I still use it for intranet applications that support only
Windows).
And OpenOffice has really improved too. It's far better than MS Office.
I noted that Ubuntu borrowed a lot from Mac OSX in terms of menus and
configurations. Not a bad thing - it is really great to use.
To sum up, I feel that Ubuntu is a worthy competitor to Windows on the
desktop space. I introduced Ubuntu to some of my students and 2 of them
have started using it full-time in lieu of Windows 7. They simply love
the speed, simplicity and functionality of Ubuntu.
If you have PC hardware, Ubuntu is definitely recommended!
Mark.
