The main idea here is that even if the omni and sector are
the same strength the omni is going to have a higher noise
floor because it's listening to everything all around it,
thus it will not perform as well at further distances.

What you are saying is true on "calculated" antenna patterns,
but the "measured" strength out in the field would be very
different. I've seen WISPs time after time fight with a system
for months trying to get an omni to work, and as soon as they
stopped fighting it and put up two sector antennas (of the
same or slightly greater db) all their problems disappeared.

On the flip side, in an area where coverage is king, and you
need to hit a relatively small area, an omni will work great.
