It does readjust, but the server becomes unresponsive during that time (minutes). Last time we ran a perl script allocation 2 GB of RAM with 1 GB free and the system was unresponsive for about 2 minutes.

ARC taking up all the free memory, leaving a few GB free. I was just about to try setting a VM with more memory than is free and wondering if the system could adjust itself.
