The limitations of that controller is that the SES-2 interfaces are via SGPIO or I2C from the HBA. You'll need to make sure those connections are in place. According to SMC, you'll need to connect the SGPIO (aka Sideband Headers) to the HBA. I'm not familiar enough with the IBM HBA to know how to connect to it. Without those connections, you won't be able to manage the locator LEDs. Joyent has added some HBA-oriented LED code for failures.
