I'll add a decidedly low-tech suggestion. As I put drives in my experimental 
Supermicro box, currently running SmartOS and other OS's under ESXi, I take 
photos of the drive label and add them to a note in Evernote, annotated with 
the drive’s X/Y coordinates in the chassis. At intervals, I add a device 
summary that includes the serial numbers, e. g. the output of "iostat -En".

Obviously, this is not convenient at scale.
