Hi John I'd been playing with SmartOS on a couple of intel desktop boards and I had a similar issue where I'd get the SunOS message and nothing else. After a bit of head scratching I decided to hook up a serial console and voila, everything was booted and running and ready to install. The real fix for me was to install a second video adapter. Perhaps SmartOS doesn't like Intels on board devices. Strange really because the onboard device works fine in OmniOS and Openindiana.
