I have not run into this problem on my setup. Samba 3 isn't going anywhere for awhile. Most of the major distros have not fully embraced samba 4 yet. Samba 4 doesn't even fully run yet on red hat enterprise Linux. If you look at the samba mailing list you'll see that those who are using it are using it as a AD PDC, using windows management tools.
