I know they are working hard to integrate more of the fileserver features into Samba 4 right now. I just read the release notes for Samba 4.2 release cadidate and it looks like they've made some good headway with this version. I am not convinced they are going to get away with doing an end of life on Samba 3.6 anytime soon though. There's a HUGE jump in technology difference going from Samba 3-4. This is no where near like it was going from Samba 2-3.
