Dirk:

I will also be moving my NUC work to the Broadwell NUCs as well. These
Broadwell NUCs were just announced at CES in January. I have not seen these
Broadwell NUCs available through the normal sales channels yet. The places
that are advertising them are showing "Temporarily out of stock”. I am
actually working directly with Intel to secure some immediate samples of these
NUCs. I can’t drive down into the Broadwell versus Haswell details, but on the
surface we’re looking at die shrink to 14nm and some low power enhancements.
I’d be very surprised if SmartOS/OmniOS/SDC would not install and run.

I’ll definitely follow the SSD/HDD issue. However, my plan is to use the
m2SATA as the primary storage on the Broadwell NUC.

Marc,

you NUC seems to be Haswell-based and I am glad to hear that there

are no problems with SmartOS.

My main concern is that a new CPU generation like Broadwell might need

some specific support code inside the kernel, and I am unsure if the

current SmartOS kernel does support this.

Same concern applies to M.2 PCIe SSDs like XP941. I assume that

they also might need specific kernel support. Especially for the new

NUCs that support one M.2 and a regular HDD it would be very interesting

to be able to use the M.2 as log and/or cache device for a 2 TB

2.5“ HDD.

You are right that these NUC would PXE-boot to be a compute node.

Dirk:

I just went through this experience using the D54250WYK/H NUC. No problems
whatsoever in SmartOS installation. I did not try SDC on the NUC, but as SDC
is an orchestration layer in Node.js on SmartOS, I don’t see an issue here.
I’m assuming you are going to pull together the NUCs as a head node and compute
nodes. As the NUCs also PXE boot, I don’t see any issues with SDC in this
respect either. As I was interested in also provisioning my NUC as a desktop
system, I have also been able to install OmniOS on the same NUC. I was able to
install Xorg/Gnome on OmniOS on the NUC with no issues. Please keep me
informed as to your progress.

Regards, Marc
