I don't think I would single out pkgsrc as being undesirable in the
GZ.  It's more that _any_ extra software in the GZ should likely be
avoided, if possible.  Sometimes it's not possible to avoid, though;
e.g., if you need an NFS server, or you're monitoring some hardware.

In the event that you must install software in the GZ, I would
actually _recommend_ that you try our pkgsrc bits first.  Of all of
the ways to get extra software into the GZ, this is the most likely to
function without a lot of work, and most likely to be available in a
similar way in the future.

This is more of a guideline  and it's really intended to reflect the
design centre of SmartOS as well as the practical reality that most
engineers working on the OS are (obviously) not testing your
particular add-ons so they break in the future.

If you _do_ have to put software in the global zone, though, I would
definitely try to use the pkgsrc bits rather than rolling something
custom.

If the software is wholly (or even partly) available via pkgsrc, I
would try that first.
