Maybe. But for attaching cheap and large external disks for backup purposes
USB3 is actually a good solution. I do that on Mac OSX (with OpenZFS)
all the time. And Thunderbolt disks are much more expensive… and in practice 
(for the backup use case) not really faster.

Also I am setting up a home lab with Intel NUCs and here again USB3 
would be very handy to attach large disks as the NUCs only support
one internal 2.5“ disk.
