FWIW, this is becoming less true as SSDs improve. In the bad old days, some SSDs were much better at write-intensive workloads (orders of magnitude). Today, there are many SSDs that do well for both read and write-intensive workloads and the difference between write-intensities is the amount of OOB overprovisioning. Since you can usually influence overprovisioning yourself, this reduces the need for
separate devices.

I assume that you would still recommend against using SSDs without power fail protection for log devices?
