Ian,

Your information is very helpful, and well addressed my question.

We do not use a configuration management tool now. Given that we have quite some KVM Linux VMs, it won't be easy to re-install them in new LX zones and copy data. So we were considering converting Linux VMs into LX zones directly.

Last question, why delegated dataset is necessary here?

Not so much necessary as very useful. If you ever wish to reprovision a zone, the delegated dataset will be untouched so any data you wish to persist across a reprovision can be safely placed there.

You also have access to the native ZFS tools within the zone to manage the dataset locally. This can be especially useful if your zones hosts something like a database that works best on its own volume with a specific configuration (block size for example).

Cheers,
