Everyone has been helpful as I've been investigating SmartOS*, thank you.
Now it's time for me (and a couple others at the company) to decide if it's
a good fit for our needs, and I hope you can help fill in some info so I
can clarify my thinking:
--
At the high-level it was designed for deploying many nodes, repeatedly and
rapidly. Network booting with little local configuration helps with that,
and OS updates/rollbacks. The "real" version (where one main node
coordinates others) is actually Triton (AKA SmartOS Datacenter), correct?
Clustering ("HA") isn't a requirement, but of course minimizing
downtime/the ability to quickly bring up a workload on other hardware if
necessary is desired - some sort of live migration ability would be nice,
but I understand Joyent's take is that should be done on the app layer,
correct?
What is the designed use-case for S.O. standalone - mostly testing?
One-offs?
Searching the joyent website, it appears that there are no professional
support offerings for SmartOS Standalone - is this correct?
What's the migration experience from one or two standalone S.O. nodes to
the DC edition, both locally and combined w/ Joyent's cloud offering? If I
started with, say, OmniOS would I be able to import zones off an existing
pool?
(For those wondering, our immediate need is for one handful of
inter-dependent processes/storage chunks, and is actually rather tame.
However, the ability to fairly easily scale locally and/or convert to a
hybrid on-prem and "cloud" model is desired to plan for future growth. The
ability to run Linux workloads and full OS guests is a requirement for
piece of mind, even if it turns out 99% of what we run is quite portable.
Docker-format containers is a plus, but not required.)
*Drawn in large part by the talks and articles from various Joyent folk
who's philosophy I appreciate.
