I'll try to answer these inline. -- Brian Bennett Systems Engineer, Cloud Operations Joyent, Inc. | www.joyent.com <http://www.joyent.com/> > On Oct 10, 2016, at 11:49 AM, Matthew Parsons <[email protected]> > wrote: > > Everyone has been helpful as I've been investigating SmartOS*, thank you. > > Now it's time for me (and a couple others at the company) to decide if it's a > good fit for our needs, and I hope you can help fill in some info so I can > clarify my thinking: > -- > At the high-level it was designed for deploying many nodes, repeatedly and > rapidly. The "real" version (where one main node coordinates > others) is actually Triton (AKA SmartOS Datacenter), correct?
I wouldn't necessarily use the term "real" just for Triton. SmartOS is the
foundation upon which cloud and datacenter orchestration software can build.
For example, Project FIFO is another cloud orchestration stack that uses
SmartOS as the base.

Yes, that's correct. Vmadm can send/recv joyent brand zones (and probably lx
brand) but won't work with KVM. KVM can be migrated manually using zfs
send/recv and manually setting up the zone xml and index, or perhaps by using
something like g4u.

As mentioned above, it's a foundation for upstack services. In one sense, its
primary purpose is to be a foundation for Triton, but putting that frame on it
would be limiting of its potential. We made SmartOS fully open source so that
people can use it for whatever purpose they see fit.

I'd encourage you to get in touch with Sales ([email protected]
<mailto:[email protected]>). Depending on the terms you're seeking we may be
able to accommodate you.

SmartOS doesn't support ips brand zones so migration from OmniOS probably isn't
going to work. Again here, it's probably better to replace instances rather
than to migrate.
