I'm curious, what Linux utility is this? Is it just plain old ipmitool?

In the GZ of a SmartOS box, you can utter 'ipmitool mc reset' to issue a reset 
command to the management controller, aka the BMC. You can try this first. You 
can further use ipmitool to change the BMC's configuration if you need to.
