Hi,

See https://wiki.smartos.org/display/DOC/Administering+the+Global+Zone#AdministeringtheGlobalZone-GlobalZonePersistence
https://github.com/joyent/smartos-live/blob/bfedd68cf2715fab8462aeb43f6d72c59ce914f1/overlay/generic/lib/svc/method/fs-joyent#L121-L123

/etc/zones is mounted from zones/config and it's persisted on disk as it contains Zone configuration files:

Filesystem             Size   Used  Available Capacity  Mounted on
zones/config          7.02T   370K      6.80T     1%    /etc/zones
