Thanks for the suggestions. In my case, NetBIOS lookup is the most convenient solution, so if you're able to track down the problem I'll use that. If not, I'll take a look into implementing one of your suggestions. With respect to the WINS server, I was hoping to be able to drop in the OpenSolaris box without having to change the existing network environment (it's a backup server, and I'll probably set these up in multiple environments). With respect to the hosts file, I'll be connecting to computers with DHCP addresses in many cases, so that may not work.
