Using debug into the logs, confirmed the slave was receiving the configs. The pings were being performed and it claimed they were sent.
However, the modification time on the rrd files for the slave on the master did not change. I did not see slavecache files either. Changed perms for the directory to 777 and slavecache files appeared, but rrd was not updated. Fiddled with changing rrd to 664 and setting the group to www-data , no go.
