I am still a little confused on why you got the message about the config in the
first place, but I am sold, glad you made it work. Thanks for the reply.

Using debug into the logs, confirmed the slave was receiving the configs. The
pings were being performed and it claimed they were sent.
However, the modification time on the rrd files for the slave on the master did
not change. I did not see slavecache files either. Changed perms for the
directory to 777 and slavecache files appeared, but rrd was not updated.
Fiddled with changing rrd to 664 and setting the group to www-data , no go.
Gave up, made rrd to 666 and it worked

That doesn’t seem right.. Perhaps you did solve an issue with the rrd perms but
if the slave is not receiving any config from the master it can’t be the rrds..

Finally figured it out, had to change the rrd files on the Master to 666.
However, the files are created with 644, so added a cron job to fix the perms.

access to those files? The communication between server and slave goes through
the cgi so the apache user should have read access to the secrets file (that
can not be word readable by the way).
Try to check the apache logs too for errors and access (on the master).
