Please remember we are all users here, not the maintainers of the software. We
are using our past pains to relieve you of yours, some of the time with poor
success.. But we do try ..
Part of why smokeping docs are out of date has to do with the fact that Tobi
has little time to do it. More over he is now developing v3 as he has found
some funding for it, and it seems to me that developing a new version while
trying to maintain the documentation for the old one is not an easy task for
only one person..
But like I said, there are guides out there.
Please specify your distro and I will do my best to show you what I have found
so far that might be related..

I agree, they're not awesome, but they're definitely do-able. I guess I'd say:
I'm sorry you had a hard time. However, in many cases, I think the difficulty
lies in that the user doesn't know *nix very well, and how things work in the
*nix world. Thus, it takes forever to do the leg-work and bring yourself up the
learning curve. [I know it took ages for me!]
Once you've got that - you learn some tricks and have enough background to get
through most things fairly efficiently. Until then, it's pretty painful, and
there doesn't seem to be many ways to help shorten or alleviate that pain.

Using debug into the logs, confirmed the slave was receiving the configs. The
pings were being performed and it claimed they were sent.
However, the modification time on the rrd files for the slave on the master did
not change. I did not see slavecache files either. Changed perms for the
directory to 777 and slavecache files appeared, but rrd was not updated.
Fiddled with changing rrd to 664 and setting the group to www-data , no go.
Gave up, made rrd to 666 and it worked

Finally figured it out, had to change the rrd files on the Master to 666.
However, the files are created with 644, so added a cron job to fix the perms.
