as has been said, it seems to vary. I have various battery packs 
that work with iPods that do or don't (or half) work with a 
first gen iPhone.


I've been using both of the first two items here:

the case/battery gives about 2/3 of a full charge in practice 
(it works better if you wait til the iPhone battery is very 
low). The second one gives a full charge. You can charge them 
both via USB in case you don't have days of uninterrupted sunlight...

I usually happily get through a very busy day on one charge but 
the newer phones don't do as well, I gather. I find these 
batteries really useful and they charge other bits and pieces too.


I did have a problem with the rainbow charger one so I sent it 
back and they sent another one two days later which works fine. 
It's much better in my experience than a Solio which is twice 
the price.
