Thanks for the suggestions.  I've also got a cheap charger (not USB) that
just goes into the mains and I'll have a look at its power setting before
trying it out.

I think that my expectations on battery life are probably aspirational -
I've previously run basic Nokias which seem to last about five days on
standby without charging.  Although I understand that the iPhone battery is
so advanced it does not need calibrating, I did give it a good charge when
it came out of the box but it does not seem to be able to go beyond about 36
hours on standby.  What is reasonable battery duration following a full
charge to expect from an iPhone?
