Hi Stephen Sounds like your computer thinks it's using the optical audio output, which has no volume controls. If you go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sound > Output > what's selected?
Try putting some headphones into the headphone port then pull them out again, also try blowing into the port to dislodge any dust.
