Well no sooner had I finished trying to explain the problem than Apple released a software update which apparently addresses the issue: <http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/11/26/apple-fixes-sd-hdcp-issues-with-quicktime-update >. So now it's a non-problem, hopefully.
