Hi Jason. Just to answer your questions. I have both a firewire 400 and an 800 port at the back of the imac. The drive only has an 800 port although it does have two ports to allow for daisy chaining. No difference in terms of response with the cable in either of the 800 ports on the drive itself. The drive does have an external power source so I am not sure whether it's a good idea to unplug that and try to let it run on the firewire alone. Essentially if it's any use to you this is the listing for it on amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000W9Q2EW/ref=s9alfla_c6_flshimg2-rfc_p?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-6&pf_rd_r=0T52QQKMQGASSHY3D7DV&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=220563091&pf_rd_i=163514031
Unfortunately I have no other firewire 800 devices to hand to test the cable and imac 800 port connection on. I do have an adaptor which allows a male fw 400 plug to be inserted into a female fw 800 connection. I know my fw 400 port on the imac is working because I have a set of Lacie speakers connected to it, and the system profiler sees the speakers but it doesn't see the drive. I plugged a 400 cable into the 400 port on the imac and plugged the 400 to 800 converter on the other end and inserted it into the external drive which caused it to behave as if it was constantly restarting itself for want of a better way to express it. Not thinking this was a good thing to have carrying on I powered off the computer and then turned off the external drive using its power button. anyway that's how things stand at the mo'. Incidentally, what is the power manager and where can I locate it? Secondly, what are the options if the firewire 800 bus isn't behaving as you say : supplying power but without data capability? I'm no longer in warranty so am I facing a hefty bill? I'm a bit loath to do too much experimenting with the drive as it has my entire aperture library on it which I haven't yet stored in a vault - I know a cardinal sin. Sorry to go on.
