Hi Virginia If you don't have a firewire port you can't use target disk mode. Your best best is to :
1. Boot the old Mac and open up Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant 2. Choose to transfer data to another Mac via an ethernet cable 3. Connect an ethernet cable between the 2 Macs 4. Open the Migration Assistant on the new Mac and choose to transfer data from another Mac using the ethernet cable That should do it. If ethernet fails for some reason you'll need to extract the hard drive from the old laptop and connect it via a USB to SATA/IDE bridge (£12 on Amazon). Oddly enough, the initial Migration Assistant that runs when you start the Mac for the first time won't let you migrate from an external USB disk. If you create a blank user called "test" or any name different to the username on the old Mac, then run the Migration Assistant as a program it'll allow you to migrate from an external USB disk. This might be different for the Snow Leopard setup Migration Assistant, I haven't explored it fully yet.
