it's always like the length of a piece of string. Different 
media decay more quickly and certain conditions (sunlight 
especally) speed it up. I seem to remember discussion a few 
years ago that concluded four years was the time to start 
copying the copies if you wanted to be really sure. To be 
honest, the original media should last better than copies so you 
might be better off just making a copy when you buy, and then 
using the copy one until it wears out, then going back to the 
master one.
