Hi, It is taking around half an hour when it would normally would  
take around ten mins. ( never actually timed when it was in 'zippy '  
stage) RAM has  not changed. hard disk pretty much the same. Verbatim  
disks  - did try various of same just in case it was, as you suggest  
'dodgy disk'

I guess what is worrying me is that my Emac is now 7 years old. Is  
this just sign of decrepitude and possible failure somewhere...eek
