I don't think you can avoid SOMETHING opening to put together the print information. even if you could get something that reads doc files to do it, I find none of them realyl quite render Word documents properly unless they've very simple. The simplest way I know is to open it in Word and hit the Print toolbar (fewest steps). Probably the reason you get a blank window if Word is not running is because the Automator script times out. That could be fixed. Spell out the workflow a bit more precisely. Are you trying to automate? Or just avoid launching Word? (etc). With Word open, if I drop a doc file on a desktop printer icon, which seems to be what you are doing, it prints it without further ado. Are you saying this doesn't work? Where is the printer icon exactly?
