I like a little free app called GrandPerspective which scans your hard drive and produces a picture of it as a mosaic of different sized blocks representing different files or folders. When you mouse over these blocks you see what they are. If you find a big block that you know you don't want any more (eg I found some old GarageBand files which were surprisingly big) you can delete them.
