Probably because if Mail on the iPhone is the same as on the iPod  
touch it can only send from the one account. e.g. this is sent from my 
[email protected] 
  which is registered with the SMUG Google group. My iPod only allows  
me to use my 'main' mac.com address and so I cannot send an email to  
SMUG as Google would not recognise the 'from' address as being a valid  
one.
