Hi

This process is called transcoding where one video format is converted
to another. iMovie 09 will work with AVCHD as will the latest versions
of Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express. If you have any of these then
you can just copy the video files from the camera and work with them
as they are.

If however you are using iMovie 08 or earlier then you will need to
convert the files to work with them as has been done.
