My hard drive (in my MacBook Pro) was replaced a year ago. This wasn't due to a failure but because I just needed more space than the 80Gb original disk. I thought about replacing it myself, but decided to use Sam (MacAmbulance) instead as I realised I didn't have all the required screwdrivers to do the job myself. I left it with Sam in the morning and collected it, upgraded to 250Gb, in the evening. I also had the old drive, which I placed inside an external case, and now used for backups on another Mac. So, my hard disk replacement was really easy and well worth paying Sam to do! It was a Western Digital Scorpio 250Gb 2.5" drive from www.dabs.com (around £45). Its discontinued now but I see a few 320Gb ones for around the same price at the moment.

The hard drive on my MacBook has failed It happened before and was replaced under warranty. Warranty is now a distant memory and, sadly, I can't afford to replace the Mac. I would like to know the following:

1) If I boot from another disc is there software I can use to try and recover what's on the disc or is it simpler to restore from the latest Time Machine back up?

2) How difficult is it to replace the hard drive by someone who scores 4-5 on the mechanical competence scale?

3) If it is feasible for me to do it what are the best drives at the moment and where can I source one?

4) Is it better to put a large drive in or a smaller one and use external drives for storage etc. ?

Thanks
Philippe
