I had a problem where I had to clone the drive with Super Duper and
was able to use an external drive for months. Then just clone it back
when you have upgraded the drive.

I had my Super Drive replace by a Sam and it was all straight forward.
So would not be too expensive, plus yo know that it will be returned
working. I could have done it myself but the expense was well worth
the lack of anxiety that had I done it properly.

I can not help there. Just make sure that it is the right depth too
big and you have wasted your money.

Separate drives are better, because you have the option of backing up
to a separate drive. My plan next is to upgrade the drive and have a
matching external for time machine and even a third for cloning.
