Peter I went back and completely re-initialised my time capsule.
I now seem to be up to speed. So I'd suggest you go to airport utility, as Sam suggested for me, take a screen shot of all your settings, and then click to restore default settings, and re set up your network. I'm now having troubles with my airport extreme network extension, but at least the time capsule base station is running fast again.
