i'd still give the apple store a go. They have a utility that checks the status of the battery as to wether it has expired or if it's faulty. They will still look at and diagnose the problem, just not repair it for free.
Other than that maybe some process is preventing the laptop from sleeping properly, or powering it back on after shutting down.
