I think there's a utility on the web to make winmail.dat files
usable. It was once mentioned on the mailsmith list.

Very important client I'm afraid so I can't get all huffy.
Apparently the IT bod has disabled switching to plain text on this
guy's Outlook (is that possible), so we're a bit stuffed.
Odd thing is, I've used TNEF's Enough in the past to open
winmail.dat attachments but it won't play ball with this particular
one.
I'm having the kind of morning that makes me hanker for the days of
pens and paper. Or cave painting maybe.

I'd reply and ask them to resend in plain text each time you get
the Rich Text attachment. They'd soon get fed up and change it to
plain text :)

I'm afraid I don't know, this page might help you to persuade him
to change but how important is the client? (Don't answer that...)
If it was me, I'd bounce it back and ask them to resend in a format
that I can read. But then I'm a stroppy sod.
Best wishes

All,
I have a client from whom I receive many emails from numerous
different employees. In one case however, any email attachments are
encoded as winmail.dat files, which I than have to jump through
hoops to extract and read. The IT manager at the client says
there's nothing she can do to fix the issue (I suspect the problem
is that it's a long way down her list of things to do), but surely
it's simply that this one guy has his email client (Outlook I
think) set up to encode attachments differently. So does anybody
know what Outlook preferences I should ask him to tweak?
