I find the idea of one very appealing, but as my income stream is ... err,
reduced I'll hold out for now, at least until March... But, I have an iPod
touch and NO mobile phone. That means that a lot of the handy features such as
looking up maps or being able to get online when I'm out and about are
difficult or impossible for me at present. Given that a lot of my trips out
mean I have my backpack as a matter of course and an iPad + 3G data would slip
in there without me noticing and give me all of those very handy things it
starts to look rather good. I have a iBook G4 but I don't carry it out and
about a lot because a) It seems very heavy for what I use it for b) It's WiFi
only so same problem as above c) All the useful iMac info I need isn't on it,
though it is on my iPod.

There is of course the aspect of it that is beyond tech specs which is the fact
that it will feel like a very different experience due to the size of the touch
screen and that intangible 'feel' is what makes so much Apple stuff so good.

Finally, I laughed a lot when I saw this rubbish on the BBC site today:

Industry watchers say Apple's long-awaited iPad tablet could reverse the
fortunes of the tablet PC industry. Microsoft introduced a tablet computer in
2001, but it failed to catch on.
However, advances in touchscreens and wireless technology mean that the market
could now be right for products such as the iPad, analysts said. "Tablets have
been around for a long time and tablets have failed for a long time. This is a
winning product," said analyst Van Baker of Gartner Research.

So, let me see if I've go this right.

a) Analysts says "Tablets have been around for a long time and tablets have
failed for a long time."
b) Microsoft introduced a tablet computer in 2001, but it failed to catch on.
c) Apple has now created something unlike any other tablet computer before it -
form factor, multi-touch, battery life and applications
d) Analysts believe that the iPad, is a "winning product"
e) ... and these analysts believe that Apple's product "could reverse the
fortunes of the tablet PC industry". Not Apple's fortunes, not sales of the
iPad note, but the "tablet PC industry". And they have reasoned that how,
exactly?

I'd love to be an "analyst" - it seems that you can come out with any old stuff
and get it printed and get paid! Nice work if you can get it ...

Regards,

Stephen
